In Malaysia, the Fire Safety Organisation of designated premises is required to conduct a fire drill at least once a year under Regulation 6E(1)(i) of the Fire Services (Fire Certificate) (Amendment) Regulations 2020. What is a Fire Drill?

No. The annual fire drill requirement under Regulation 6E(1)(i) applies specifically to designated premises. Under the Fire Services Act 1988, premises may be designated based on their use, size or location for fire certificate purposes. Therefore, the requirement does not automatically apply to every workplace in Malaysia.
Organisations can refer to the Fire Services (Designated Premises) Order 2020 [P.U. (A) 289], which sets out the categories and criteria used to determine designated premises. These include certain offices, shops, factories, hotels, places of assembly and other premises, subject to the specific thresholds and conditions stated in the Order.
For designated premises, Regulation 6E(1)(i) of the Fire Services (Fire Certificate) (Amendment) Regulations 2020 requires the Fire Safety Organisation to conduct a fire drill at least once a year. This is the minimum required frequency, although organisations may conduct additional fire drills based on their workplace risks, internal emergency procedures or other applicable requirements.
A workplace fire drill checklist should typically cover evacuation routes and exits, assembly points, emergency roles and responsibilities, communication procedures, and arrangements for accounting for occupants.
