The P.A.S.S. technique is a simple and effective method used to operate most common fire extinguishers safely during the early stage of a fire emergency. Before using a fire extinguisher, always ensure the fire is small, manageable, and that there is a clear escape route behind you.
- P - Pull the safety pin to unlock the extinguisher and break the tamper seal.
- A - Aim the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire, not at the flames.
- S - Squeeze the handle slowly and firmly to release the extinguishing agent.
- S - Sweep the nozzle from side to side across the base of the fire until the flames are completely extinguished.
The fire continues to spread or becomes uncontrollable, evacuate the area immediately and contact the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba). Personal safety should always be the top priority during any fire incident.
Note: Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and workplace fire safety procedures when operating a fire extinguisher.
